PrimeVal StressLess Pheromone Gel works on the pheromone principle. Pheromones are intrinsic signalling molecules widely used in animal communication. They are invisible but recognisable to the horse. They are species-specific, which means that the horse only recognises pheromones from the horse and not, for example, from a cow, dog or cat. Pheromones are analysed by the Jacobson organ. This can be seen in the horse's behaviour. When a horse runs away, the pheromones it takes up are transferred to the Jacobson organ. The mare releases pheromones a few days after the foal is born to create a safe and calming environment around her. This also promotes bonding with her foal. Adult horses also recognise these pheromones and give an instinctive, calming response as it creates a feeling of security.
